The Special Events Committee is a working and fund raising committee which welcomes all ages from the congregation to participate. We assist with church events but also have our fund raisers, like Family Day, Bar-B-Que, etc.
From this Committee we have formed 'The Wednesday Club' for retirees and all members of the congregation who are at home and would like to have a day of fun and games and to share any ideas you may have. Yoga exercise class has now become part of our weekly get together.
And so, Wednesday February 1st, 2006 saw the first special day for those Saints who were able to attend - housewives, retirees and others not at work. It was a day of fun and games, talk and music and even some light exercise. At the initial session, there were about fifteen attendees, largely female. It is hoped that many more, especially gentlemen, will feel encouraged to go to the Memorial Hall and join in, as a good time was had by all. Some stayed the full length of the session, from 9.30 am to 2 pm, others for just a part.
After a ‘getting to know you’ session, Carnival became the topic for discussion. To the sounds of such old calypsos as ‘Shame and Scandal in de family’, ‘Working for the Yankee Dollar’, ‘Rum and Coca Cola’, and ‘Mary Ann’ (the sanitised version, it was made clear!) memories of Carnival of long ago were exchanged. Some played a version of dominoes called chicken foot, but mostly they chatted, happy in each other's company. Eventually they were stirred into action by Barbara Johnson, who took to the floor and persuaded others to join her. Music played and a sequence of steps was demonstrated and quickly learned - perhaps it was a new dance!
On Feb. 14th, 2007 we were pleased to have Mr Llewellyn MacIntosh - Calypsonian Shortpants and Heather perform for the Wednesday Club.
Clearly this is a wonderful venture, deserving of our full support; our Saints are alive, indeed! Assistance in the form of board games, suitable books and magazines, snack items, CDs would be very welcome. What is most needed, however, is a small part of your time – perhaps just an hour on occasional Wednesdays, when you could provide some entertainment or activity which the participants would enjoy. Or perhaps you could help others to attend by providing transport?
Please call Mrs. Barbara Johnson (627-7244) or any member of the Special Events Committee, or leave a message at the Church Office if you wish to obtain more information or can offer any assistance.
