The Reverend Canon Claude Berkley
Rector of All Saints Church
The designation All Saints connotes a higher order brand name of which we are all justly
proud. It would be a thing of marvel if we could recapture the philosophy, which led to the
naming of the then Chapel of Ease, All Saints’ Church. One Hundred and sixty years later,
we have a splendid opportunity to reflect on how this designation has captured the actual
witness of the Saints.
This commemorative magazine, which marks the one hundred and sixtieth (160th)
anniversary of the dedication of All Saints’ Church, will give at least a glimpse of the
tremendous heritage that All Saints’ can claim in fulfilling the mission of God in Christ. In
terms of ministry we will receive greetings from those who either presided over, or served
its people or were produced from here for ministerial service. The fact that a very high
percentage of this resource is indigenous, gives us a sense of the magnificent heritage to
which I alluded above.
It is hoped that honorable mention would also be made by, or about some of, the Saints
who distinguished themselves through their lay ministry and their generous giving, from
All Saints’ to the Chapel of Ease and back. I refer particularly to those who sacrificed time,
talent and treasure to set the foundation for another generation of Saints. Our celebration
would reach its high point if we are able to draw forth at last to or three Saints who would
devote themselves to supra-committed ministry to young people at the present time. We
give God thanks for those who have gone before and those who continue in this important
ministry.
I feel privileged to be called to share in the dynamic ministry of All Saints’ Parish. I wish to
pay tribute to all my predecessors, who remain the active memory of the parish, and have
shaped parish life in special ways. May I also commend as well those who have worked
in our institutions, and those who have been served by them at Bishop Anstey High
School, Bishop’s Centenary College, St Ursula’s Girls Primary School and the Gordon
Home.
Additionally, I must thank the 160th anniversary committee and the parish as a whole for
making this occasion an important witness for Christ. Further, I would like to thank the
donors to this magazine project, and all contributors to its content for producing this
special resource. The Lord’s name be praised.
As God continues to work His purpose out, may the Saints, ‘surrounded by so great cloud
of witness’ become more and more available for His service, and ‘run with perseverance
the race that is set before us’ Blessings and peace to you on behalf of my family, as you
share in this feature, which seeks to celebrate 160 years of mission.
