Children's Church

Maraval led an innovative approach to children’s involvement in worship, known as ‘Children’s Church’.
Mrs. Chatfield led an introductory session at All Saints with Sunday School teachers, to explore different
ways of presenting the teachings of Christ for our children.  This was followed by a Mass for children at
Maraval led by Rev. Chatfield, in which he used refreshing teaching techniques and materials to engage
the children in the service.

The Mass included lively action songs, visual aids, and a dramatic illustration of the meaning of the
Gospel which involved direct participation of children and adults alike. This led beautifully into the
celebration of the Eucharist, with all its spirituality and communion. We thank Father Chatfield for
involving us in this new direction.  We trust his teaching will bear fruit, and look forward to welcoming
him again to an ‘adult’ Mass.

What did Arie Van Druten (age 10) think of the service?

The service began with a blast!  The congregation sang gleefully as we had a little hip music.  Then as
the music stopped, the Guest instead of reading, he pulled out a red bag.  He called it the Jesus bag.
He said it does whatever Jesus wants it to do.

After he said, "I would like people to give up their most valuable things".  Three people did, a lady gave
up her ring, a man gave up his credit card and another man gave up $100.  Then he walked to the front
of the church and shook out the bag.  Everyone expected the things to fall out but they did not.  Instead 3
tickets fell out.

He asked a girl to read it, it said "a free ticket to the Kingdom of Heaven".  Everyone laughed then he
gave everyone their tickets and gave them back their things but the man who gave up his credit card,
said "keep it, it is less important than the Kingdom of Heaven".

After he told us wonderful stories and gave us whole wheat bread and grape juice as the body and the
blood of Christ.  It was the best service ever!
