1. Naomi. Naomi means sweetness or pleasantness. After she lost her husband and sons, she called herself Mara meaning bitter. Ruth was devoted to Naomi. She accompanied Naomi to her homeland saying 'Where you go, I will go; where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God'. We find Ruth in Jesus' family tree.
2. Elizabeth. She was a godly woman and a descendant of the honoured priestly line of Aaron (Moses’ brother). She was married to a priest named Zechariah. They were blameless and enjoyed a clear conscience. Even with her heritage and commendable virtues Elizabeth lived with shame. She was childless and well past her childbearing years, in a society where a woman’s value was largely measured by her ability to produce children. She was likely considered by others to be cursed by God but in her old age, God allowed her to give birth to a prophet.
3. Eve. Poor woman. She was the first woman and the mother of all the living but her son committed the first murder. Abel was dead and Cain was sentenced to wander the world, but fortunately she and Adam had other children.
4. Sarah. She was the wife of Abraham and gave birth to Isaac who was the father of Jacob. Jacob became the father of the twelve tribes of Israel. It is an exciting story in the book of Genesis.
5. Bathsheba. She is in Jesus family tree - Matthew 1:6 -'whose mother had been Uriah's wife.' Read about David and Bathsheba in 2 Samuel 11 & 12.
6. Mary of Nazareth. She is the mother of Jesus. The quotation is from Luke 1:38. Just think about what difference we could make to the world if each of us were to answer God's commands so readily?
