A Message from the Reverend Canon Carl Major
When you leave Canada on a cold December day and arrive in Trinidad with the
temperature in the eighties and step out of the airplane the heat strikes you like a wall of
hot pleasant air. Trinidad was new to the Major family of six even though we had lived in
Antigua for three years. Our daughter Ruth and three sons, Andrew, Adrian and Stephen,
with Norma and I were prepared for new adjustments. It is now thirty three years ago. On
December 11th 1973 we were meet at the airport by a greeting group of parishioners
from All Saint’s lead by Henry Rollock and Bob Arthur- Wong, the two church wardens.
We arrived in a parish where the refrigerator was filled and the welcome mat was out.
We had nearly four wonderful and rewarding years of ministry in the Diocese of Trinidad
and Tobago leaving in June 1977 to work as the Director of Development Education at
the National Office of the Anglican Church of Canada in Toronto. All Saint’s is an
exceptional parish. Outreach programs, supporting the work of the Diocese, enriching
music, lively and renewing worship and involvement in the social fabric of Port of Spain.
We received more than we were able to give in the few years that we were privileged to
work in ministry with Miss Mason, Canon Winston Joseph and the teams of dedicated
lay parishioners. Working in the Diocese with Bishop Abdulah , Dean Knolly Clarke and
other clergy was a joy and a privilege.
Our oldest son Andrew completed his “O” levels at Trinity College and went on to
University. All of our children had grown and received a solid education in Trinidad that
held them in good form as they in turn entered and completed university. Our three sons
who are physicians with nine grandchildren live here in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Our
daughter Ruth is a Marketing Manager with BC Hydro in Vancouver. Norma and I are
retired, living in St. John’s.
As you celebrate 160 years of ministry at All Saints, we pray for God’s continuing
blessing on every parishioners and all the parish teams as you continue your work of
service to the Lord.
Blessings
Carl.
