Annual Prayer Breakfast - Feb. 2007

On Saturday 3rd February 2007, the All Saints’ Memorial Hall was filled for the annual Prayer Breakfast. The theme was
‘For what profit is it to a man, if he gains the whole world and loses his soul?’ Matthew 16:26 NKJV.
The Rev’d Canon Berkley blessed the breakfast, after which the Spoken Word Marian Helpers choir led us in praise and worship.
Canon Berkley introduced the two speakers. The Rev’d Michael Chatfield of the St Thomas Anglican Church, Chaguanas was
the first speaker. We were treated to the story of Anancy and the 5 yam hills, taught how to boil a frog and reminded about crabs
in a barrel. “Michael” challenged us to identify the area(s) of our lives in which we encounter a powerful pull from the world.
He warned us against believing that Matthew 16:26 does not apply to us because we don’t desire the ‘whole’ world….only that
part of the world to which we believe ourselves to be entitled! He encouraged us to identify the ‘small’ things with which we
become comfortable but which are capable of controlling the way we live our lives.
After further praise and worship, the Rev’d Erica Cartey-Lewis of the Methodist Church addressed us. She first made the observation that it was difficult to
encourage people to render their service to God. She used examples from her own life to remind us that when God calls us, He also sustains us. Rev’d
Cartey-Lewis encouraged us to place our hands near to our hearts and each day ask ourselves “Is it well with my soul?” She invited us to view our lives as
being inseparable from our souls. So that in seeking to balance our lives we must remember that the things of the world are temporary and perishable and
that our souls are imperishable and have greater value.
Rev’d Cartey-Lewis identified two dangers of gaining the whole world. Firstly, it allows materialism to come between God and us. She reminded us that
living for God and living for money are mutually exclusive. Secondly, it causes us to measure or define our worth or success by our acquisitions. She
advised that abundant life is attained by the relationships we maintain, especially by placing God first in our lives. Francis Arindell Lewis (Rev’d Cartey-
Lewis’ husband) sang a capella his composition entitled ‘30 pieces of silver’. It spoke of Judas’ betrayal of Jesus Christ for money. This song emphasized
the fact that one cannot serve two masters. There followed a period of Ministry.
The All Saint’s Prayer Group wishes to thank Canon Berkley, Rev’ds Chatfield and Cartey-Lewis, Marian Helpers, Ministry team, all our members and
everyone who contributed their time, talent and treasure towards this venture.
